The new year is often the moment to start flying full of energy again. But this year was different: nature forced us to slow down. Because of the snow, Haarlemmermeer turned into a true winter wonderland. Beautiful!
It also showed something valuable, namely how naturally you help each other. You cleared your sidewalk of snow, not only for yourself but especially for people who cannot do it themselves. You helped each other up after a fall. And there was room for fun: sledding together, throwing a snowball, sharing a laugh.
Perhaps the most special was the understanding most residents showed for the situation. You were patient when not everything could be done immediately, such as postponed waste collection, a missed vacation due to cancellation, or a party that could not take place. Despite your rightful disappointment, you understood that safety sometimes comes before speed.
Great efforts were made to ensure safety. The heroes of Meerlanden and the Meerboeren worked day and night to make the roads as snow-free as possible. Still, not all roads were passable, and there was a work-from-home advice. That required flexibility from all of us.
The winter days made clear how quickly an ordinary day can change, and how nice it is to be somewhat prepared. A warm blanket or some extra food: these are small things that provide extra peace when things go differently than planned.
Together we have shown that we can handle an unexpected situation well. We looked out for each other, helped where needed, and took a moment to consider what we have at home to be prepared. That mutual resilience makes us stronger and gives confidence for the future!
